Day 1:

Flight from Maun to central Okavango Delta

This morning we depart Maun, the “safari capital” of northern Botswana, on a 30 minute scheduled charter flight for Xigera. Xigera Camp (pronounced Keejera) lies on the aptly named Paradise Island, surrounded by deep channels and lush vegetation. There are ten raised luxury tents with en-suite facilities, an outdoor shower, and superb views of the classic Okavango Delta floodplains that surround the camp.

Meals and evening drinks are enjoyed in the lounge, bar and dining area overlooking a permanently flowing channel or under the stars in a traditional African boma. For those hot days there is a small plunge pool in which to cool off.

Day 2-4:

Central Okavango Delta

Xigera camp is an area of stunning beauty where the sounds, smells and sights of wild Botswana are simply overwhelming. When the flood water comes down from Angola, the Kalahari changes from an semi-arid savanna into a lush lily-covered wetland brimming with life. Nowhere in the whole of the Okavango is this more beautiful than in the area surrounding Xigera. Xigera Camp is located within the southern border of Moremi Game Reserve, yet is quite central within the Okavango Delta. The airstrip is only about 15 minutes drive from the camp, which is accessed by a short flight (20 to 40 minutes) from Maun depending on routing.

The main lounge and dining areas are spacious and welcoming, focusing around a fire that looks over one of the permanent channels of the Delta. The camp itself is very well spaced out with each safari tent being joined by a maze of high wooden walkways, allowing game to stroll directly through and under camp. Each tent has a large thatched roof, en-suite bathroom with indoor and outdoor showers as well as a wooden veranda offering great views over the floodplains in front.

This is a great area for Red Lechwe and even the shy Sitatunga, and this paradise is superb for bird photography; certainly Xigera epitomises the beauty of the Okavango and Moremi! This camp is famous as a great site to see African Skimmer and even Pel’s Fishing Owl, and with luck we may find and photograph this large, ginger “teddy-bear”!

Time seems to move at a very relaxed pace at Xigera and being the only camp in the area we are guaranteed to spend our days in complete solitude, sharing the surroundings with Xigera guests in total privacy. In addition to game drives for photography, the camp offers walking safaris and mokoro trips, the latter the perfect way to enjoy the glittering green waterways in the area.

Day 5:

Flight Xigera to South-Eastern Okavango Delta

After game drive and breakfast we will depart Xigera and fly to south-east to Chitabe Lediba. Traversing the delta by air is spectacular, as the largest river on earth that does not flow into the sea spills out onto the sands of the Kalahari, creating a green mosaic of waterways and islands that are both visually appealing, and filled with game!

Chitabe Lediba Camp is one of the Okavango Delta’s finest safari camps for dry game viewing.

Located in a private concession area in the south-east of the Okavango Delta, this camp receives very little water and so no boating activities are possible. However the quality of game viewing in the area is phenomenal with Chitabe Lediba well respected as being one of the best big game viewing areas in the country. This is a fantastic little camp, and is a great combination with one of the Okavango’s wet camps such as Xigera.

The camp’s eight spacious Meru-style tents are built on elevated wooden decks amongst trees. Each tent has twin beds, en-suite facilities and an indoor as well as an outdoor shower. The thatched dining, pub and lounge areas are built on raised decks to provide superb views across the floodplain, and a pool allows one to cool off in the heat of the day. After check-in and lunch, we will set off on our first afternoon game drive in search of some of the Okavango Delta’s famous residents.
